MTX is the operating system for a high-performance, highly parallel computer called the Tera MTA. The operating system addresses many implementation issues for large-scale parallel shared-memory computers, such as the organization of operating system functions and the architecture of a concurrent kernel. At the same time, the end result must be a stable operating system that conforms to industry standards (Unix, Posix, etc.). This challenge has led us to divide the OS into three layers. The micro-kernel layer, written entirely at Tera in C++, performs resource management including memory and processor scheduling. The supervisor layer contains the I/O subsystem, the file system, and Unix interface layers. The User runtime, which is not part of the OS, performs fine grain thread scheduling.
This presentation will briefly describe the architecture of the Tera
MTA. The micro-kernel and supervisor will be then be discussed,
especially those aspects specific to the MTA architecture. Some
portions of the User runtime will also be discussed.
