Three essential aspects of web site development and maintenance are spell checking, HTML syntax checking/validation, and checking for bad links. Some good tools for checking HTML syntax are Weblint and Tidy. (Their output should be piped through Perl scripts to filter out extraneous warning messages.) Conformance to the HTML 4.0 standard can be checked using the Web Design Group's HTML validator. A good tool for checking for bad internal and external links is Linklint. Spell checking can be done with Korn shell scripts that calls the Unix spell command and a Perl script called dehtml (part of the htmlchek package).
The second presentation will focus on significant differences between the various Unices (Solaris, various Linux versions, AIX, HP-UX, SCO, etc.). Non-portable extensions to Unix will also be discussed (e.g., access control lists, non-portable commands, non-portable system calls, etc.).
