DNS (Domain Name Service) is the backbone of the Internet and any IP-based
system. DNS translates domain and host names
into numeric IP addresses and IP addresses back to FQDNs
(Fully Qualified Domain Names). BIND (Berkeley Internet Name
Daemon) is the standard method of maintaining and resolving these
addresses. Unfortunately, BIND has taken sendmail's place as one of
the primary security hazards on the Internet. The Daniel J. Bernstein Domain Name Service, more popularly known as djbdns, is an alternative to BIND. djbdns offers the advantages of security, speed, simplicity, and security. (To paraphrase the movie Blazing Saddles, "kinda like that security".) All the djbdns servers run as non-root users with limited privileges. djbdns consists of several small programs that are dedicated to specific tasks, whereas BIND is a monolithic program that does everything. Hence, configuring djbdns is more work than configuring BIND. In return, djbdns offers a long-term solution to the security problems associated with BIND.
