May -- An Introduction to BSD Unix
Jeremy C. Reed will introduce the BSD Unix operating system, including its history, licencing and an overview of the three main BSD flavours: NetBSD, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD. Development of BSD Unix began in the 1970's and many of its features are found in modern Unices, Linux and Mac OS X. Webhosting surveys show that BSD systems power a significant share of ISP servers. Reed is a consultant and trainer for Puget Sound Technology, and a developer for NetBSD, Pkgsrc and other open source projects. As time permits, he will also introduce Pkgsrc, a portable package building system for Unix, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows and other operating systems. Pkgsrc automates fetching, patching, configuring, building, installing and packaging software suites. Meeting locationHere's a map of the meeting location. Take Highway 405 and exit to go EAST at the NE 8th St. exit in downtown Bellevue. (That's the eastbound NE 8th St. exit, not the SE 8th St. exit.) Go approximately one quarter mile east on NE 8th St. and turn RIGHT on 120 Ave. NE. Go past the Home Depot store on your right and continue until the road begins to turn to the right (west). At this bend, continue straight and enter a driveway leading to a number of buildings. The first building on the right (west side) is 11911 NE 1st St. Drive to the back (south side) of this building and park. The entrance to the building is on the south side. Mosaic Technology is in Suite B 304 (third floor). If these directions are not clear, call Mosaic Technology during business hours at 425.462.5004.There is plenty of free parking all around the building. We recommend that you arrive by 7:15 p.m so you can gain access to the building. |
